03 Key Strategies for Managing Remote Teams of Construction Industry in Sri Lanka: An HRM Perspective

Construction teams in most organizations in Sri Lanka meet the necessity of developing strategies for managing their remote work teams since the organizations are managing multiple projects at once. The nature of construction projects makes it difficult to manage remote teams, which involve on site-work and coordination with clients and organization. Therefore, the role of HR managers is vital in encouraging cooperation, maintaining productivity and ensuring employee well-being. Here are some key strategies that can be used for managing remote teams in construction industry in Sri Lanka.

Building Trust and Communication:

One of the basic strategies to managing remote workers is establishing trust and maintaining a good open communication. According to Chen & Zhang (2021), technology tools such as video conferencing and project management software can facilitate the above. It will help to build up a strong relationship by regular check-ins, and transparent communication within the organization.

Setting Clear Expectations and Goals:

Setting up a clear expectation and goals make the team stay more focused on the objective. Project management tools can be used to track the progress and identify delays deviations and from our critical path. Therefore, detailed job descriptions, setting up objectives, monitoring and regular feedbacks will ensure everyone is on the same path to success. (Tucci & Tucci, 2020)

Providing Support and Resources:

In construction industry, remote workers often face the difficulty of finding necessary resources for their activities. Therefore, the HO should provide necessary support and resources to help to keep the workflow. This includes not only human resources, also equipment, training and development programs and mental and physical health support. Offering flexible work arrangements helps to meets individual need of workers and stay more focused on project goals. (Kim & Kim, 2022).

Construction industry in specifically in Sri Lanka faces unique challenges and opportunities. This makes harder for managing remote teams hence requires more specified strategies to overcome these challenges. Implementing these strategies can improve project outcome, personal development and the long-term success of the organization in this competitive industry.

    1. Im addressing the remote work force. In construction sites far from HO, managers cannot often attend meetings with HO since it may effect the site progress. So video conferencing is a great strategy for HO officials to maintain transparency and trust with others who are in remote places
